The diagram below shows potentials of the A (blue) and B (red) pins of an RS-485 line during transmission of one byte (0xD3, least significant bit first) of data using an asynchronous start-stop method. Serial data is shifted out least-significant-bit first. EIA-485 (formerly RS-485 or RS485) is an OSI Model physical layer electrical specification of a two-wire, half-duplex, multipoint serial connection. EIA-485 only specifies electrical characteristics of the driver and the receiver. RS485 meets the requirements for a truly multi-point communications network, and the standard specifies up to 32 drivers and 32 receivers on a single (2-wire) bus. The standard specifies a differential form of signalling. If A is negative with respect to B, the state is binary 1. The reversed polarity (A positive with respect to B) is binary 0. The standard does not assign any logic function to the two states. The "idle" state (MARK) has the signal level negative with respect to common, and the "active" state (SPACE) has the signal level positive with respect to common. Chassis and signal grounds are connected together to the digital ground (DGND) signal.

To provide a convenient means of attaching two grounds to the serial cable, there are several pins (labeled DGND) on the communications connector that are connected to the controller’s ground plane. When communicating at high data rates, or over long distances in real world environments, single-ended methods are often inadequate. This method is one of the simple and easy to implement methods to transfer the data over long distances. The specification allows for data transmission from one transmitter to one receiver at relatively slow data rates (up to 20K bits/second) and short distances (up to 50Ft. @ the maximum data rate). The hardware detects the start-bit of the transmission and automatically enables (on the fly) the RS485 transmitter. The connection between two or more elements (drivers and receivers) should be considered a transmission line if the rise and/or fall time is less than half the time for the signal to travel from the transmitter to the receiver. In this project, we have only used a baud rate of 9600 which is well under the maximum transfer speed we can achieve with the MAX-485 Module but this speed is suitable for most of the sensor modules out there and we don’t really need all the maximum speeds while working with Arduino and other development boards unless you are using the cable as an ethernet connection and require all the bandwidth and transfer speed you can get.

While the standards bring uniformity to data communications, many areas are not specifically covered and remain as "gray areas" for the user to discover (usually during installation) on his own. While a multi-drop "type" application has many desirable advantages, RS422 devices cannot be used to construct a truly multi-point network. To solve the "data collision" problem often present in multi-drop networks hardware units (converters, repeaters, micro-processor controls) can be constructed to remain in a receive mode until they are ready to transmit data. RS422. RS422 is also specified for multi-drop (party-line) applications where only one driver is connected to, and transmits on, a "bus" of up to 10 receivers. In its simplest form, a pair of converters from RS232 to RS422 (and back again) can be used to form an "RS232 extension cord." Data rates of up to 100K bits / second and distances up to 4000 Ft. These distances I'm talking about are greater than 100 meters. Suggestions are often made to deal with practical problems that might be encountered in a typical network. In general if you are not connected to a modem the handshaking lines can present a lot of problems if not disabled in software or accounted for in the hardware (loop-back or pulled-up).

If a star configuration is unavoidable, special RS-485 repeaters are available which bidirectionally listen for data on each span and then retransmit the data onto all other spans. The CB485 can be used with a wide number of RS-485 converter ICs using the common MAX483 and MAX485 half-duplex 8-pin DIP pinout. The PCB-CB485 is a bare PCB to build the CB485 logic-level to RS-485 adapter. A PCB soldermask helps prevent solder bridges on tracks and a silkscreen legend provides part locations. Now coming to the setup part. EIA standards where previously marked with the prefix "RS" to indicate recommended standard; however, the standards are now generally indicated as "EIA" standards to identify the standards organization. Popular Offer MisolWeather Station With Rs485 Port 4 Wires Cable With Cable Length 10 Meter with FREE Shipping Worldwide Now! As a rule of thumb, the speed in bit/s multiplied by the length in metres should not exceed 108. Thus a 50-meter cable should not signal faster than 2 Mbit/s. Differential data transmission (balanced differential signal) offers superior performance in most applications.
