It's a nice-looking fridge that has the bottom-right FlexZone compartment that can be converted from refrigerator to freezer. This lets you keep things like bags of frozen meat, frozen vegetables or fish in the freezer. It was a great performer in our tests too however the absence of a voice control or SmartThings integration on the 21.5-inch touchscreen was an opportunity missed.

The rest of the fridge has plenty of room for food storage, with two crisper trays and the middle FlexZone drawer, which can be customised. The latter lets you select between five different settings for the fridge freezer drawer depending on your preferences. There is the freeze setting that is compatible with the freezer settings as well as a soft freeze setting for wine or deli tray, a meat or fish setting, and a beverage setting for drinks, snacks and frequently accessed items.

This Samsung FlexZone side by side refrigerator is perfect for families who want to have a fridge and a freezer in one. It's not as spacious than high-end French door models, however it offers a lot of useful features and is an excellent option for those with little space in their kitchens.

The SmartThings app is pretty elegant and well-rounded and comes with a 'if x then y' automated section that performs surprisingly well. You can set things up like an alarm going off when water leak sensors detect a flood, or turning on a light when your phone detects that you're at home. It can even control your refrigerator, if you connect it to a smart outlet, although we've seen mixed results with that.

SmartThings requires a hub which isn't cheap. Samsung has a number of different options which include the SmartThings Station that you can connect to a router and use as a nightlight. There's also a less expensive SmartThings Hub Dongle that can support Z-Wave and Zigbee, with Thread support in the near future.

Once you've connected your smart fridge to your phone and hub, it's very simple to use. The SmartThings app lets you manage your fridge from any location and sends notifications to your smartphone whenever it's opened or closed. You can create schedules, alter the temperature and set reminders.

SmartThings was an early participant in the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working towards making major home appliances from different manufacturers interoperable. In the near future you can control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same application.

While it's not as well supported as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some big names on its roster that include Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's also compatible with Matter, an open protocol that allows devices to be paired regardless of brand. The best option for most people is to combine Alexa and Google Assistant.

Family Hub

A fridge freezer doesn't get much more modern than this: it has a 21-inch touchscreen in the door, complete with a variety of clever features. You can access entertainment apps, make notes for family members (think the size of a notepad stuck to the fridge), check the weather and more, all thanks Samsung's own voice assistant, Bixby.

The touchscreen can also be used to organize your food and recipes, with the ability to add ingredients straight from a recipe app and see what's in your fridge through internal cameras. You can create grocery lists on the go and track foods to see their expiration date. You can also use an app for recipes to read the recipe while cooking.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung says it's spent a year adjusting them to the needs of customer feedback. You can now create separate profiles for every member of your family so that they can customize the information and apps they have access to. It's not as effective as Alexa integration in your fridge but it is an improvement over the model of last year.

Apart from its ability to manage grocery and entertainment, Family Hub also acts as a controller for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be used to control Matter-compatible devices like lights and plugs as well as locks.

Samsung's fridge is a few years old, and, although it still offers a wide range of functions but its touchscreen features aren't a feature many people would consider to be essential. They're more fun and a bit of frivolous extras than any other feature.

That might change as more software updates are released, but for now these models are ideally suited to those who want the most comprehensive connected fridge possible. You can save money by purchasing one that does not include the Family Hub if you're not one of these people. If you have many smart home appliances that you want to control from one screen, or you love the idea of having a fridge with a huge touchscreen, it might be worth the money.
